Mobility as a Service

Of the mobility model of the future and how companies use it wisely.

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) describes a concept in which mobility is offered as a service. Users should be able to book, manage and use transport services of various public and private transport companies via a uniform portal. This represents a new mobility model in which it is made as easy as possible for users to get from A to B. The new portal is designed to provide a single point of contact for all users of public and private transport services.

This model is based on the idea of the so-called Sharing Economy, in which platforms and solutions are shared. Especially in urban areas, Mobility as a Service solutions can lead to a reduction or even abolition of private ownership of means of transport. This is often referred to as shared mobility or mobility sharing.

In recent years, all kinds of service providers have entered the market that make use of this very concept. Examples are ride sharing, car sharing and bike sharing or e-hailing service providers such as Uber, COUP, car2go or mytaxi, which enable users to book shared means of transport or taxi and driving services by smartphone.

But the MaaS idea is even more holistic, because the concept encompasses the vision that users can plan, manage and pay for their entire journey with a single app - no matter how long the journey is, how many different means of transport it includes and which transport companies make the means of transport available. This is a very user-centric approach that is already being used in some pilot projects in cities around the world.

Benefits for users

The advantages of the Mobility as a Service application are manifold. Users benefit from the following advantages:

  • Simplified access to mobility, even without your own vehicle
  • increased comfort through convenient use - from planning to administration to payment
  • enables efficient travel
  • Reduction of expenses, since no own vehicle is necessary any more

Benefits for businesses and public institutions

But cities, communities, businesses and the service providers themselves can also benefit from MaaS solutions. The benefits include:

  • Optimized and efficient transport system of a region
  • obtaining comprehensive data sets reflecting actual use and real needs
  • Efficient allocation of resources by evaluating this data
  • the creation of new businesses and jobs to meet mobility needs in the best possible way
  • costly decisions, such as the expansion of mass transit systems, can be made data-driven
  • Reduction of the Total Cost of (Business) Mobility
  • Improving the management of traffic accidents
  • paired with new technologies, completely new transport options are opening up, such as autonomous vehicles

In addition, the application of the Mobility as a Service concept to freight transport can bring further advantages in terms of resource allocation and cost optimisation.

Requirements

In order to realize this holistic vision of seamless mobility within a community, city, country or even internationally, the following prerequisites would have to be met:

  • maximum connectivity
  • widespread use of smartphones in 3G networks and higher
  • Secure real-time information on travel options, schedules and timetable changes
  • reliable and widely used cashless payment systems

However, companies, service providers, institutions and cities can already benefit to a smaller extent from Mobility as a Service solutions until all requirements have been met.

Mobility as a Service for Corporates

The use of a MaaS solution can be particularly worthwhile for companies. On the one hand, means of transport that are used jointly are better utilised, so that fewer vehicles are needed. This in turn actively contributes to environmental protection and can significantly reduce mobility costs. On the other hand, a company's own fleet of pool vehicles can also be an important incentive for employees, as it significantly increases their mobility both in business and private life.

Here you will soon learn everything about pool vehicle management – how to improve administration, how to optimize your car pool or why it is worthwhile for you to convert part of your fleet into a car pool.
